    Guest Speaker: Norbert Ore

    Trying to make that tough decision whether or not to hedge in on a certain commodity or make a long term agreement as opposed to a short term agreement? We have seen raw materials like Copper skyrocket due to demand from countries like China, causing industries to re-think how to manufacture products. Meanwhile, those “creative” home loans have sent a lot of folks into foreclosure. Can the Fed afford to continue to drop interest rates? The February Professional Development Meeting provides a unique opportunity for our members. Our guest speaker will be Norbert Ore, the Chair of ISM’s Manufacturing Report on Business® , the internationally recognized business survey.

    Norbert has responsibility for writing, releasing and serving as official spokesperson for the Report. He has chaired the committee for the past 11 years and during that time he has spoken with numerous organizations in the U.S. and internationally, including an address to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve Board.

    This program will provide an informative update on the U.S. Economy and its prospects going in 2008. Our guest speaker will be the Chair of the Institute for Supply Management’s Manufacturing Report on Business® , the internationally recognized business survey which is released monthly and considered a leading indicator of the performance of the U.S. manufacturing sector. As chair of this committee and a supply management professional, Mr. Ore will provide unique insights on the U.S. economy and the impact of recent economic events.

    Mr. Ore’s purchasing career has included government, construction, consumer products and the paper and packaging industries. He is presently Group Director, Strategic Sourcing & Procurement for Georgia-Pacific LLC in Atlanta. Prior to joining G-P, he had assignments at Chesapeake Corporation and Sonoco Products Company.

    About the Speaker:
    Norbert Ore has extensive experience as a supply chain leader and has served Fortune 500 companies in consumer products, paper, packaging, and construction. His mission in each instance has been the transformation of the business through process improvement and cost reduction. He is currently Group Director of Strategic Sourcing & Procurement with Georgia-Pacific LLC in Atlanta.

    In 1996, he was asked by the Institute for Supply Management to chair its Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, a volunteer position which gave him responsibility for compiling, writing, and releasing the ISM Report on Business®, the monthly report recognized as a leading indicator of the manufacturing sector and the overall U.S. economy. As spokesperson for the Manufacturing Report, he is frequently quoted in the business press, and he has appeared many times on the national TV and radio networks. Additionally, he is a frequent speaker and author on the subjects of negotiation, contracts, services procurement, and strategic sourcing.

    He holds an undergraduate degree in business and a master’s in organizational management in additional to being a Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.). Norbert Ore is the 2007 recipient of the prestigious J. Shipman Gold Medal presented by the Institute for Supply Management for leadership and service to purchasing and supply management.
